BMI Calculator
Calculate your body mass index (BMI) from your height and weight, and learn what it can and can't tell you.
What BMI means
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For adults, the World Health Organization uses these ranges:
- Under 18.5: underweight
- 18.5–24.9: healthy weight
- 25–29.9: overweight
- 30 or more: obesity
Limitations
BMI doesn't measure body fat directly. It can overestimate fat in muscular people and underestimate it in older adults. Some populations, including people of South Asian descent, may face higher health risks at lower BMIs. Waist size and other measures add useful context.
BMI for children and teens uses age- and sex-specific charts and isn't covered by this calculator.
